~~~The following information applies specifically to the Dallas, Texas, area. However, it may contain information and ideas that you can use in your area. Best of luck to you!
Unfortunately, we don’t have a dog-trainer apprenticeship program right now. A very good way to become an apprentice (maybe not the easiest, however) is to try to get a job at PetSmart or PetCo. They will actually pay you while they train you to become a trainer. I know some of their stores are looking for trainer-trainees right now. Do a search on the Internet for “dog jobs” or something similar, and see what you come up with.
Another thing you can try is volunteer for one of the local rescues in your area. Animal Guardians in Celina, Richardson Animal Shelter in Richardson, Second Chance SPCA in Plano, or Operation Kindness in Carrollton, may be good possibilities. They won’t be able to pay you anything, but you’ll get a lot of valuable experience.
Keep up with your reading and viewing from the APDT (http://www.apdt.com) recommended list. In addition to your reading, try to watch a lot of dog-friendly videos, too. My favorite authors and presenters include Dr. Ian Dunbar, Dr. Karen Pryor, Nicole Wilde, Dr. Jean Donaldson, Dr. Patricia McConnell, Paul Owens (the original “Dog Whisperer”), Jerry Patillo (hee hee), and too many more to mention.
How many newsletters bombard
you daily with advertising hype?
How many times have you signed up for a newsletter, only to be bombarded daily with advertising hype and nothing of substance? Our newsletters come out only four or five times a year. Yes, to be honest, they too will contain advertising, but only a modest amount in order to promote our services. Mostly, our newsletters will contain real information on training and behavior you can actually use. Sign up today. It’s free!
